AM I OK?

This article is in honour of R U OK day with a little flip and my perspective added to the conversation of mental health issues and how we can help ourselves and others live with it.

When a person struggles with mental health issues it is so easy to look outside of ourselves for the answers. Our inner pain can be so all consuming that it really appears that we are powerless and we ‘seek’ answers to heal our mind.

Of course, to reach out to others is a must when we struggle but if we only ever feel that the answer to our pain is outside of ourselves, we will never reach the GIFT of inner knowing, healing and break through.

Depending on the level of severity, distress, pain, confusion, distraction and other variables that a person may be experiencing will determine how much ‘external’ intervention is needed in their quest for a healthy mind.

Obviously, there are many mental health conditions that need medical treatments if there is a medical diagnosis, this written piece does not in any way apply to all cases of mental health and severity of, but generally there is so much we can do to manage a healthy mind ourselves before it gets to a debilitating chronic stage.

My experience personally, within my family and working with many people as a coach and professional health practitioner tells me that all healing starts from within, this concept is deeply entrenched in my belief system.

It is hard to believe, particularly if we are really struggling on a day-to-day basis that we actually have all the answers and resources ready to go in order to heal deep inside us.

Tapping into this knowledge starts with the unconscious mind otherwise known as the subconscious mind.

Our unconscious mind is such a powerful tool and drives everything that we do, it drives our habits, behaviours, belief systems, it also hides deep so many wisdoms that are waiting to be unlocked if we are brave enough to open to it.

Working on the mind subconsciously to reduce mental health issues is an area that I am a huge advocate for, having experienced my own mental health issues, this type of work is just one part of the healthy mind puzzle that has helped and continues to help me and my clients.

I am a huge advocate of all of the proven practical practices that help people with mental health issues, quality mindful movement, mindfulness, healthy diet, healthy friends, family, community and healthy workplaces etc.

Healthy boundary setting, self-respect and self-development is also key to healing but does not come easy for some people, this healing concept can take time and practice to unlock for some.

Trusting our own ability to cope is often times a fragile concept when we are deep into mental health pain, it is almost impossible to feel and see into our future. Taking time out alone to face full on our demons while sitting in peace, quiet and journaling to find our inner answers takes commitment and courage.

If you are struggling today, I encourage you to take this allusive scary moment, find a pen, a journal, and a quiet place to be brave and ask yourself the questions below. This is an subconscious mind process designed to help you tap into your inner power and will take about 5 – 15 minutes depending on how deep you go.

Before you start, know that when you ask these questions just pause and trust what answers come to you. If nothing comes right away keep trusting, allow your unconscious mind to be your inner guide, it truly knows what’s best for you.

Do not take too much time to over analyse the question, because this will only put you into your critical mind. It is the critical mind that so often is a major factor of our mental health issues that we have, there is way too much ‘thinking’ going on in most unhealthy minds.

This practise may seem weird at first but remember that small consistent steps with bring you a far greater result. I don’t know if you have heard the saying

‘THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON THE QUALITY OF YOUR QUESTIONS “

AM I OK - SUB-CONSIOUS MIND PROCESS

Ask question – pause - allow answer to come - if needed repeat question again – say it out loud if needed- write down answers – answer in the positive - let it flow – keep writing - don’t judge – congratulate yourself!

  1. What is the problem?
  2. Is this your problem or someone’s else’s?
  3. What is the best thing about having this problem?
  4. What is one thing that you haven’t done to fix this problem?
  5. How is this potential solution good for you?
  6. How is this potential solution not good for you?
  7. What else can you do?
  8. What is one more practical action you can take today?

Celebrate your answers!!

It may or may be what you were looking for but the more that you run though this type of inner work process, the more that you will build your own inner power and wisdom. The more that we build our inner power, the more that we will be equipped to help others.

When we live with mental health issues it is a POWERLESS state to be in, we feel like we can’t handle life. In order to turn this around we MUST consciously create new and empowering habits, capabilities and beliefs that build our confidence in our ability to cope with our life stressors.

Today, not all of us are in a place to say “R U OK ? “ if that is you, that’s OK. The best thing you can do is ask yourself “AM I OK?” And be prepared for the honest truth from yourself. Being deeply truthful about what is going on in your life and where you are at is the very first step to your personal transformation and healing.

I know the truth of how I can help others

I make it a part of my every day practise to nurture my mental health, this is the very best gift you and I can give to the people we love, our friends, workmates and our communities.
